Drimmer was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of City College of New York and earned his doctorate in history from the University of Rochester. As a history professor at CSU, Drimmer assigned all of his students a family history paper, which was intended to provide not only a family tree, but also a socio-economic history of each family. Her maternal grandfather, John Fitzgibbons was born in County Tipperary, Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1904. He married Mary Carroll, who also came from County Tipperary. Fitzgibbons worked for the railroad in Cleveland and was a car inspector for the New York Central line. They lived in a section of Cleveland known as The Angle, a renowned Irish neighborhood north of Detroit Road and east of West 28th Street on Cleveland's West Side.
